Andre Leon Talley was an American fashion writer, stylist, creative director, and editor-at-large of “Vogue magazine.” He was well-known for serving as the magazine’s fashion news director from 1983 to 1987, its first African-American male creative director from 1988 to 1995, and its editor-at-large from 1998 to 2013. In 2008, he also gave fashion advice to Michelle Obama, pushing her to look into designer Jason Wu’s apparel collection.
Talley has written three books, including the memoir “The Chiffon Trenches,” and was the editor-at-large of Numero Russia in 2013, before quitting owing to Russia’s anti-LGBT laws. Andre Leon Talley began his career at Andy Warhol’s Factory and “Interview” magazine for $50 a week, following which he moved on to “Women’s Wear Daily,” where he became the Paris bureau director, and “W” from 1975 to 1980.
He subsequently worked for “The New York Times” and other magazines until settling at “Vogue,” where he was the fashion news director from 1983 to 1987 and then the first African American male creative director from 1988 to 1995.
Andre co-wrote the book “MegaStar” with Richard Bernstein in 1984, although he resigned his post as creative director at Vogue in 1995 to work for “W” and as a contributing editor at “Vogue.” He returned to “Vogue” in 1998 as editor-at-large and stayed until his retirement in 2013 to pursue another editorial initiative.
