Flora Duffy’s unexpected triumph made the tiny Atlantic island – which has a population of 62,278 people, making it even smaller than Bognor Regis – the smallest nation to win Olympic gold during a summer Olympics. “I believe the entire [of] Bermuda is going wild, that’s what makes it so unique,” said Duffy, who won in 1hr 55min 36sec, 74 seconds ahead of Britain’s Georgia Taylor-Brown, who came back from a puncture on the 40km bike stage to earn silver.
“This was my dream, but I also realized it was greater than me.” She had spent the last five years bearing the weight of being an Olympic favorite as well as carrying the dreams of her nation on her shoulders.
