High School Career
Purdy began his senior football career as a freshman at the newly built Perry High School in 2015. The Arizona Interscholastic Association (AIA) changed the sports regions in 2016, putting Perry in the 6A Division Premier Zone, the sixth hardest region in the country.
Purdy’s performance helped Perry to the 6A Division AIA State Championship game in 2016 and 2017, where they lost 65-28 and 48-42 to Chandler High School, respectively.
During his time, Perry started to establish itself as an Arizona football force, battling against Chandler Unified School District’s more established strong schools like Chandler (0-5), Hamilton (4-2), and Basha (4-2). (2–1). Purdy finished with a 27-13 record at Perry.

College Career
Purdy began his rookie season at Iowa State as the third string behind Kyle Kempt and Zeb Noland. After Kempt was injured and Noland was unproductive, he was named starter. Overall, he started eight games for the Cyclones, completing 146 of 220 passes for 2,250 yards, 16 touchdowns, and seven interceptions for a career-high 169.9 passer rating (sixth best in NCAA football), and collecting a 7-2 record. The year was highlighted by 435 yards and a school record 510 total yards, as well as three touchdowns against Louisiana-Monroe, five passing and one rushing score in a tight 41-42 defeat to then-No. 9 Oklahoma, and 372 yards with three passing and one running touchdown in a victory over Kansas. He set a school record by passing for a touchdown in 12 straight games, as did his 39 completions against Oklahoma State. Garoppolo suffered a season-ending foot injury in the first quarter of the 49ers’ Week 13 battle against the Miami Dolphins on December 4, 2022, forcing the 49ers to turn to Purdy once again. Purdy played well, completing 25 of 37 passes for 210 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in a 33-17 victory.
