Amal Alamuddin, better known as Amal Clooney, is a Lebanese-British lawyer who practices international law and human rights at Doughty Street Chambers. She is also well-known for being the wife of George Clooney, a film actor and director.
She interned at the office of Sonia Sotomayor, then a judge on the United States Court of Appeals for the Second Circuit, for one semester. She is both an author and an activist. The Entertainment Law Jack J. Katz Memorial Award was presented to Amal by the New York University School of Law.

Amal Clooney was born on February 3, 1978, in Beirut, Lebanon, under the name Amal Alamuddin. She is of Lebanese-British nationality and is of mixed race, since she is descended from Lebanese Arabs and Lebanese Druze. During the Lebanese Civil War, her family fled Lebanon when she was two years old and resided in Gerrards Cross, Buckinghamshire. She adheres to the Muslim faith. In the 2011 arbitration between Merck Sharp and Dohme and the Republic of Ecuador, Amal aided the Permanent Court of Arbitration. She defended Mohamed Fahmy, a Canadian Al Jazeera journalist, who was detained in Egypt in 2004 along with other journalists. She began working on the acknowledgment of the Armenian genocide in January 2015, and she represented Armenia on behalf of Doughty Street Chambers alongside Geoffrey Robertson QC.
On March 8, 2015, she filed a complaint with the United Nations Working Group on Arbitrary Detention against the Philippine government.
On April 7, 2015, it was revealed that she will be joining the legal team representing Mohamed Nasheed. Clooney started working on the newly re-opened Hooded Men case at the European Court of Human Rights, which was launched by the Irish government against the British government. In September 2018, the court denied the last appeal in the case, which she worked on with Irish Minister for Foreign Affairs Charles Flanagan. Clooney was set to defend Azerbaijani journalist Khadija Ismayilova before the European Court of Human Rights in 2016.

Appointments On February 25, 2014, the UK Attorney General’s Office named Amal to the C Panel of the Public International Law Panel of Counsel for the period 2014 to 2019. In May 2014, she signed UNICEF UK and Jemima Khan’s open letter, which demanded “action from the UK government to safeguard women and children.” In April 2019, she was appointed as a special envoy at the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office, and in July of same year, she was named Deputy Chair of the High-Level Panel of Legal Experts on Media Freedom.
