Purdy’s performance helped Perry to the 6A Division AIA State Championship game in 2016 and 2017, where they lost 65-28 and 48-42 to Chandler High School, respectively.

During his time, Perry started to establish itself as an Arizona football force, battling against Chandler Unified School District’s more established strong schools like Chandler (0-5), Hamilton (4-2), and Basha (4-2). (2–1). Purdy finished with a 27-13 record at Perry.

He was selected Gatorade Football Player of the Year and high school football player of the year by The Arizona Republic. 247Sports rated Purdy as a three-star talent.

On February 7, 2018, he signed a letter of intent to attend Iowa State University, with plans to begin classes in June of that year.

    College Career

Purdy began his rookie season at Iowa State as the third string behind Kyle Kempt and Zeb Noland. After Kempt was injured and Noland was unproductive, he was named starter. Overall, he started eight games for the Cyclones, completing 146 of 220 passes for 2,250 yards, 16 touchdowns, and seven interceptions for a career-high 169.9 passer rating (sixth best in NCAA football), and collecting a 7-2 record. [16][17] He also had 308 yards rushing and five touchdowns.

Purdy started all 13 games as a sophomore, earning a 7-6 record.

The year was highlighted by 435 yards and a school record 510 total yards, as well as three touchdowns against Louisiana-Monroe, five passing and one rushing score in a tight 41-42 defeat to then-No. 9 Oklahoma, and 372 yards with three passing and one running touchdown in a victory over Kansas. He set a school record by passing for a touchdown in 12 straight games, as did his 39 completions against Oklahoma State. He also led the Big-12 in passing yards (3,982) and finished third in total touchdowns (27 passing and 35 overall), breaking George Amundson’s 41-year-old school record of 24 total touchdowns.

Purdy had less impressive numbers his junior year, but with the development of running back Breece Hall, he led the Cyclones to a 9-3 record (tied with 2000 for best ever) and #9 national rating, their highest in a history dating back to 1895. He had three touchdowns and no interceptions in a 45-0 whitewash of Kansas State, then two weeks later completed 20/23 passes for three touchdowns and ran for 38 yards and another score in a 42-6 win against West Virginia.  Purdy tossed and ran for a touchdown in a 34-17 victory against Oregon in the Fiesta Bowl.

Purdy and Hall led the Cyclones to a 7-6 record in his senior year of 2021, highlighted by 307 yards and two touchdowns in a 24-21 victory against #8 Oklahoma State.

He also had 356 yards and three touchdowns in a 38-41 shootout loss to Texas Tech. The season was a letdown for a team rated seventh before the season, but Purdy’s 71.7% completion percentage and 3,188 yards topped the Big-12 once again.

Purdy graduated from Iowa State as a four-time All-Big-12 quarterback, owning 32 school marks in throw attempts, completion %, yards, and both passing (81) and total (100) touchdowns.

His 14 games with 300+ passing yards beat Bret Meyer’s prior school record of five.

    Professional Career

Purdy replaced quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo on the 49ers’ last drive of the fourth quarter against the Kansas City Chiefs on October 23, 2022, passing for 66 yards and an interception in a 44-23 defeat.

Garoppolo suffered a season-ending foot injury in the first quarter of the 49ers’ Week 13 battle against the Miami Dolphins on December 4, 2022, forcing the 49ers to turn to Purdy once again. Purdy played well, completing 25 of 37 passes for 210 yards, two touchdowns, and an interception in a 33-17 victory. Purdy made history by being the first ‘Mr. Irrelevant’ to throw a touchdown pass in a regular-season game.

Purdy threw his first career touchdown throw to former Panthers running back Christian McCaffrey on December 4, 2022, on a 3-yard pass. After that, he threw another touchdown to the team’s fullback, Kyle Juszczyk.
