Cecil Hurt was a long-time journalist and editor for the Tuscaloosa News in Alabama, and one of the most powerful voices in SEC athletics. He started as a sports journalist for The Tuscaloosa News in 1982 and rose through the ranks to become the newspaper’s sports editor and columnist seven years later.

The Tuscaloosa News crew was also awarded a Pulitzer Prize for their coverage of the 2011 storm that wreaked havoc on Tuscaloosa and the surrounding regions. He had seen the Crimson Tide’s greatest highs and lowest lows. Cecil was also a social media user, with over 115.9K followers on Twitter. During the latter years of Paul W. “Bear” Bryant’s coaching tenure at UA, he worked as a student assistant in the sports information office. The Alabama Sports Hall of Fame presented him with the Mel Allen Media Award in 2019. In 2016 and 2019, he was voted Alabama Sportswriter of the Year by the National Sports Media Association, and he has also received more than a dozen top 10 national accolades from the Associated Press Sports Editors. On November 23, 2021, we sadly lost such a versatile icon.

    Cecil Hurt’s Cause of Death

Cecil Hurt, a prominent sports journalist for The Tuscaloosa News, died of pneumonia complications Tuesday at UAB Hospital in Birmingham. “In pro football, clubs label their most valued players as ‘franchises,’ and Cecil was the franchise at The Tuscaloosa News,” said Ken Roberts, city editor of The Tuscaloosa News. “For our readers, his piece was an important part of being an Alabama football fan.” I’ve been to many Alabama football games over the years, and I’ve often overheard fans in the stadium remark things like, “I wonder what Cecil Hurt would say about this.” That, I believe, demonstrates the strength of his writing abilities.
