    Colin Powell was the first African-American Secretary of State, serving from 2001 until 2005. Powell, a South Bronx native, graduated in June 1958 as an Army second lieutenant and eventually served as Commander of the US Army Forces Command in 1989.

    Colin Powell was born in New York City on April 5, 1937. His real name was Colin Powell. He was an American. Powell was of mixed (Jamaican-American) origin and a Gemini sign.

    Powell was up in the South Bronx, where he attended Morris High School and graduated in 1954. In addition to his father Luther, his mother Maud was a seamstress. Despite his parents’ advice to “strive for a decent education,” Powell remained an average high school student who never considered himself a minority.

    Powell worked at a local baby furnishings company and eventually aided Orthodox families. In 1958, he graduated from City College of New York with a Bachelor of Science in geology. On his way to an Honorary Doctor of Public Service from George Washington University.

    In 2021, Colin Powell died of COVID-19 problems at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Bethesda, Maryland. He died at the age of 84. His myeloma impaired his immune system even though he was being treated for blood cancer.

    Many of his admirers and loved ones are in mourning. President Joe Biden and four of the five surviving past presidents recognized Powell as an American hero on Twitter.

    • From 1989 until 1993, he chaired the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
    • From October 1989 until September 1993, he served as the 12th Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff.
    • Powell launched America’s Promise in 1997 to assist children from all backgrounds.
    • In 2001, he became the Bush administration’s 65th Secretary of State. He was the first African-American Secretary of State.
    • He had to leave following Bush’s reelection in 2004.
    • In 2006, he spoke at a series of motivational events titled Get Motivated.
    • In 2007, he joined Steve Case’s new Revolution Health board.
    • He was a director of the Council on Foreign Relations.
    • In 2008, he spoke out for National Mentoring Month.

    Colin Powell has only been married once. His only wife Alma Johson died in 2021. Alma is an American audiologist and author of two children’s books, “America’s Promise” and “My Little Red Wagon”.

    They were married for 58 years and had three children, a boy and two daughters. Former Republican chairman of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) Michael Powell, and actress Annemarie Powell are his daughters.
