    Derek Chauvin is a former police officer from Minneapolis, Minnesota, who was convicted of the murder of George Floyd. Derek was arrested on May 29, 2020.

    During an arrest with three other police, Chauvin knelt on George Floyd’s neck for roughly nine minutes as Floyd was handcuffed and lay face down on the pavement, shouting out “I can’t breathe” (Thomas Lane, Tou Thao, and J. Alexander Kueng). George Floyd was a black guy who was 46 years old. The Minneapolis Police Department dismissed Chauvin on May 26th (MPD). Chauvin was charged with second-degree unintentional murder, third-degree murder, and second-degree manslaughter on March 8, 2021. For this second-degree murder conviction, he was sentenced to 22+12 years in prison (minus the 199 days of credit for time already served), with the possibility of supervised release contingent on factors such as good behavior after serving two-thirds of his gross sentence (the sentence before any deductions of time), or 15 years. Derek is an anti-racist American who murdered an innocent guy as a result of his racist actions. From 1996 until 2000, he was a member of the United States Army. He also worked for the police department for 19 years before being sacked owing to George’s murder.

On September 4th, 2017, he was one of the cops responding to a complaint from a mother of two small children. Chauvin allegedly smacked a 14-year-old black child in the head with a flashlight so hard that he needed stitches, then held him down with his knee for about 17 minutes, despite the youngster’s protests that he couldn’t breathe.

    In order to prevent bias in the Floyd trial, the judge barred the prosecution from bringing up the issue. According to the previous proprietor of El Nuevo Rodeo, a Latin nightclub, Chauvin worked there off duty as security while George Floyd also worked as security, although it was unclear if they knew one other. George Floyd was assassinated. Derek Chauvin was one of four cops that arrested George Floyd on suspicion of using a counterfeit $20 note at a market on May 25, 2020. He also served as the field training officer for one of the other officers. Floyd continually indicated he couldn’t breathe while standing outside the police vehicle, fought going in the car, and fell down; he sank to the ground face down, according to the criminal complaint. Several onlookers recorded videos, which were extensively distributed and televised. Minneapolis Police Chief Medaria Arradondo indicated on June 23rd that Chauvin had been taught in the hazards of positional asphyxiation and that Floyd’s death was a homicide.

    Charges and Arrests

    Derek was arrested on the 29th of May 2020 and charged with third-degree murder and second-degree manslaughter, making him the first white police officer in Minnesota to be charged with the killing of a black citizen. Third-degree murder in Minnesota is described as killing another person without intending to kill them, but “evidence of a depraved mentality, without respect for human life.” Second-degree manslaughter does not necessitate that the culprit intended to kill, but rather that he or she caused “an unreasonable danger” of significant damage or death.

    On June 3, Ellison amended Chauvin’s charges to include unintentional second-degree murder under the felony-murder doctrine, alleging that Chauvin killed Floyd while committing assault in the third degree; Minnesota sentencing guidelines recommend a sentence of 12+12 years in prison if that charge is convicted. Chauvin’s bail was set at $1.25 million. After paying a $1 million bond, he was freed on conditional bail on October 7, 2020. The third-degree murder charge was later dropped by Hennepin County Judge Peter Cahill, but Chauvin’s request to dismiss the other, more severe murder charges was refused on October 22, 2020.     Derek’s trial began on March 8, 2021, in the Hennepin County Government Center, marking the first time in Minnesota that a court allowed cameras to be used to broadcast a complete criminal trial. He was the first white Minnesota police officer to be convicted of murdering a black person, and it was only the second time an officer had been convicted of murder in Minnesota, the first being Somali-American officer Mohamed Noor’s third-degree murder conviction in the killing of white woman Justine Damond. He later challenged his second-degree murder conviction, but the Minnesota State Supreme Court dismissed his case. Then he engaged William Mohrman, an attorney, to defend him.

    Derek Chauvin’s Detention

    The Hennepin County Sheriff’s Office took Derek into custody and sent him to the Minnesota Department of Corrections. He was subsequently sent to the Oak Park Heights Correctional Facility. He was detained in Oak Park Heights until his sentence on June 25, 2021.
    In a June 25 hearing on the second-degree murder charge, Chauvin was sentenced to 22+12 years in prison (minus the 199 days of credit he obtained), while the second-degree manslaughter and third-degree murder charges were still pending. Chauvin pled not guilty to the charges stemming from the 2017 incident indictment on September 16, 2021.
