Fred West Bio, Age, Parents, Education
Fred West was born Frederick Walter Stephen West on September 29, 1941, in Much Marcle, Herefordshire, England. He was British-white by nationality and race. Likewise, he was Christian and white. Fred turned 53 in September 1994. His zodiac sign was Libra. West was the first surviving child of Walter Stephen West (1914-1992) and Daisy Hannah Hill (1914-1992). (1922-1968). Fred came from a poor farm worker family that was close-knit and protective; his father was strict and his mother overprotective. West’s mother had eight children by 1951, six of whom lived, but Fred was her favorite.
Classmates remember Fred as untidy, dull, lazy, and prone to mischief. He was never literate but had a talent for carpentry and drawing. At 15, he dropped out of school and began working at Moorcourt Farm.
Fred West’s Career
By 1957, his distinctive and guttural Herefordshire dialect had earned him the title of “country bumpkin” at a youth club in nearby Ledbury. His 13-year-old sister Kitty informed her mother in June 1961 that Fred had raped her and pregnant her. A year later, he was arrested for abusing young children and said, “Doesn’t everybody do it?” At the Herefordshire Assizes on November 9th. Despite her disapproval of her son’s activities, his mother was ready to defend him. Denial of testimony led to case dismissal. Then his mother exiled him to his aunt Violet’s Much Marcle home. By mid-1962, he had reunited with his parents, but not with his extended relatives.
In September 1962, at age 21, West reconnected with Catherine Bernadette Costello. At a Much Marcle dance hall in 1960, he met Costello, who was from Coatbridge, Lanarkshire. Costello was pregnant with an Asian bus driver when she married Fred and may have moved from Glasgow to England since her family disapproved of her having a mixed-race kid. On November 17th, she married Fred in Ledbury, and they relocated to Coatbridge, where Fred drove an ice cream truck.
Rena’s daughter Charmaine was born in March 1963; Rena and Fred said she had a miscarriage and Charmaine was adopted to explain her mixed background. The couple soon moved to Savoy Street in Glasgow’s Bridgeton neighborhood.
Rena gave birth to Anna Marie in July 1964. The baby was born on Savoy Street. On November 4, 1965, his vehicle inadvertently killed a little kid in Glasgow. The police exonerated Fred of any involvement, but he dreaded the townspeople’s harsh response and probable retaliation for the disaster. He was also prone to violent mood swings, and Rena and McNeill usually bore the brunt of his rage by early 1966. He also beat his stepdaughter many times. He is reportedly said to have started sexually assaulting Charmaine and pushed Rena into prostitution to supplement his meager earnings.
An eight-month-pregnant Anne McFall McFall was murdered in July 1967. Her fragmented bones were discovered buried in a cornfield between Much Marcle and Kempley in June 1994.
During his arrest, Fred admitted to a visitor that he had stabbed McFall to death after an altercation. Rena moved back in with Fred a month later, and they moved to the Lake House Caravan Park. Rena departed the next year, leaving the kids in his care. When Fred couldn’t watch and care for the girls, he put them in the care of Gloucester social services.
Rosemary Letts West met Rosemary Letts around her 15th birthday in early 1969. After meeting Fred at the Lake House Caravan Park, Rose volunteered to look after Charmaine and Anna Marie, whom she felt had been mistreated and first treated with love.
Rose quit her work at the bakery shortly after meeting Fred to become Charmaine and Anna Marie’s nanny. Rose eventually presented Fred to her family, who were shocked by their daughter’s decision.
Her father, Bill Letts, a diagnosed schizophrenic who is alleged to have raped his daughter, passionately opposed the connection, threatening Fred personally and pledging to report him to social services if he continued to date his daughter. Rose was put in a Cheltenham home for problematic teens in August 1969. Rose returned home to her parents on her 16th birthday. Rose chose to live with Fred, causing her father to prevent her from ever returning to his home.
Three months later, the couple moved from Cheltenham to a ground-floor apartment in a two-story home on Midland Road. Rose had their first child on October 17, 1970, a girl called Heather Ann.
Fred was arrested two months later for stealing car tires and a tax disc. He was imprisoned until June 24, 1971. Rose, who had just turned 17, was forced to take after the three girls while he spent his six-and-a-half-month term.
Miss West’s Murder
Rose is suspected of killing Charmaine just before Fred’s June 24th release. On June 15th, she took Charmaine, Anna Marie, and Heather to see Fred. Charmaine’s corpse was kept in the Midland Road coal bunker until Fred was freed. He then buried her nude corpse in the yard outside the flat’s back door, insisting he had not dismembered her. A small piece of metal tubing was found alongside her corpse, suggesting she had been confined and sexually assaulted prior to her death. Rena’s corpse was dissected, bagged, and buried in Yewtree Coppice, about a mile (1.6 km) from Much Marcle.
Letts-Marriage
Rosemary got pregnant with her second child and the couple relocated from Midland Road to 25 Cromwell Street. Rose had a second daughter on June 1st. Mae June was named by Fred and Rose after her birthday.
Prostitution
Rose began working as a prostitute soon after having her second kid, offering her services in a local contact magazine. Fred urged Rose to use these ads to get customers in Gloucester’s West Indian community. Rose had casual intercourse with male and female lodgers, and people Fred met via his business; she boasted to multiple people that no man or woman could entirely please her. Rose’s father had grown to accept her marriage and admire Fred by 1977. Bill Letts would attend Rose’s prostitute to intercourse with his daughter. By 1983, she had eight children, three of whom were customers. Fred adopted these kids and told them their darker coloring was because their great-grandmother was a black lady.
Domestic abuse
Their parents forbade them from socializing outside the home unless one of their parents was there, and they had to follow strict rules that they imposed on them, with severe punishments (almost often physical) for breaking them. The kids dreaded being hit by their parents, especially Rose, but also Fred. Rose’s aggression was occasionally unreasonable, indiscreet, or solely for her own pleasure; she took great care not to mark the children’s faces or hands. Fred was sometimes beaten by his wife. Fred managed to slam the door of the room into which he had fled as Rose leaped at him with the carving knife, resulting in the knife embedding itself in the door and three of Rose’s fingers sliding down the blade, nearly severing them from her hand.
Initial sex abuse
In September 1972, the Wests took Anna Marie, aged eight, down the basement at 25 Cromwell Street, where she was made to strip, Rose to rip her clothes from her body. Caroline Owens, 17, was employed as a nanny by the Wests in October 1972. They had taken her up on a dark rural road after she had seen her lover in Tewkesbury.
Murders
Following their assault trial, the Wests committed their first murder. Lynda Gough, 19, was the victim, whom Fred and Rose met via a male lodger in early 1973. After the April 1975 murder of Juanita Mott, Fred concreted the whole basement floor. In May 1978, Fred, with or without Rose’s cooperation but likely with her knowledge, killed an 18-year-old lodger called Shirley Robinson. In April 1977, Robinson met Fred at The Green Lantern Cafe and moved in with the Wests. Her murderer was severely pregnant. On August 5, 1979, Fred and Rose committed their last known murder with a clear sexual motivation. In mid-1979, Alison Chambers, 16, ran away from a nearby children’s home to become the Wests’ live-in nanny. An arrest was made and Fred was officially warned of Heather’s murder. At 11:15 a.m., Fred revealed to authorities he had murdered his daughter, but in manslaughter.
Following this, detectives started digging the garden at Cromwell Street where Fred had buried his daughter’s remains. A human thigh bone was discovered shortly after 4 p.m. in a portion of the garden Fred had requested police not enter. 5 – 8 March: 6 more young female corpses recovered at 25 Cromwell Street. Each victim had been disfigured significantly, and each corpse had been subjected to terrible sexual assault prior to the murder. On June 30, 1994, Fred and Rose West were accused of 12 murders and 9 murders respectively. This was their first meeting since Fred’s arrest in February. Anne McFall’s corpse had been recovered on June 7th but had not been officially recognized until this day; Fred was charged with her murder on July 3rd and appeared in court the following morning.
Fred West’s Demise
On January 1, 1995, West hanged himself in his cell by tying a blanket to a door handle and a window shutter, then descending to his knees. A cemetery artwork was discovered at the bottom of his suicide note in his cell “In remembrance of Rose and Fred West Rest in peace, no shadows. He waits patiently for Rose, his wife.”
Victims
Between 1967 and 1987, Fred and Rose West are suspected of killing at least 12 people, with much more unidentified. Several times before his death, Fred gave cryptic suggestions he had claimed additional victims but would to give any more information beyond that he had killed 15-year-old Mary Bastholm in 1968 and buried her corpse on an acreage near Bishop’s Cleeve. He also claimed to have murdered one victim while working in Birmingham and buried others in Scotland and Herefordshire.
Fred stated he and his wife had murdered up to 20 more people, “not in one place but spread around”, and he planned to expose the location of one corpse every year to police. Furthermore, practically all of the victims’ graves, both recovered and hidden, were significant to Fred, since they were buried near or at the same place where he lived or worked at the time of the murder.
