Jade Carey started her artistic gymnastics career in 2016 at the Junior Olympics Nationals, where she won a tucked Kasamatsu full-on vault, and was then invited to her first elite-level national team camp in late 2016.
She made her elite debut in the American Classic at Karolyi Ranch on July 7, 2017, and participated in the 2017 U.S. Classic.
She won first place on vault with an Amanar and a double-twisting Tsukahara, first place on the floor with a full-twisting double layout (Chusovitina) and a double-twisting double tuck (Silivas), and fourth place on the balancing beam. She then competed in the 2017 United States National Gymnastics Championships, where she won gold on vault and silver on floor exercise, finishing second to Ragan Smith.
For the first time, she was chosen to the national team. She qualified for the 2017 World Artistic Gymnastics Championships in Montreal in September 2017, finishing third in the floor exercise final (14.100), behind Smith and Mai Murakami of Japan, and second in the vault final, behind defending world champion Maria Paseka of Russia. During the event finals, she took silver on both the vault and the floor exercises, finishing behind Paseka and Murakami.
Later, in early July 2018, she participated in the American Classic in Salt Lake City, Utah, where she competed in her first elite uneven bars routine as well as her balance beam routine, placing 10th on both apparatus. She made her elite all-around debut at the 2018 U.S.
Classic on July 28th, placing first on vault (where she debuted a Lopez as her new second vault) and second on the floor (where she debuted a Moors) behind Simone Biles. In August, she participated in the National Championships, where she finished sixth in the all-around, and on the 20th of the same month, she was chosen to the Pan American Championships squad.
Jade qualified second in the vault final behind Rebeca Andrade of Brazil and first in the floor exercise final at the Cottbus World Cup, which she attended in November. In February 2019, USA Gymnastics announced that she would compete in the Baku and Doha World Cups in March, where she qualified first in the vault final after upgrading her Lopez (start value 5.2) to a Cheng (start value 6.0) and second in the floor exercise final behind Lara Mori of Italy after going out of bounds and performing a watered-down routine.
She also earned the AGF Trophy for having the greatest aggregate execution score in the qualifying round, as well as the gold medal in the vault final, when she was the only gymnast to achieve execution scores of nine on both vaults. At the Doha World Cup, Carey qualified second for the vault final behind Maria Paseka and first for the floor exercise final, 0.8 points ahead of second-place Marine Boyer of France and Kim Bui of Germany.
She won the gold medal in the vault final, beating Paseka by 0.117 points, and was the only athlete to get an execution score of 9 on both of her vaults. She won the gold medal in the floor exercise final again, this time by more than one point over Mori and Ferrari.
In July, she finished ninth in the all-around at the 2019 GK US Classic. She won the gold medal on vault ahead of Aleah Finnegan and Shilese Jones, while she tied for second place in floor exercise behind Simone Biles with Grace McCallum. She also participated in all four events at the 2019 U.S. National Championships, finishing third in the all-around behind Biles and Sunisa Lee on the first day of competition.
As a consequence, Carey was named to the national squad for the third time. In September, she participated in the US World Championships trials, placing sixth in the all-around. She was picked to the squad for the 2019 World Championships in Stuttgart the following day. In late January, Jade was named to a provisional lineup for the Melbourne World Cup, which will take place on February 20th.
She qualified for the vault and floor exercise finals in first position, 0.833 points ahead of Shoko Miyata and 0.633 points ahead of Vanessa Ferrari, respectively. At the U.S. Classic, she only participated on the uneven bars and balance beam. In May 2021, she placed fifth and fifteenth, respectively.
After participating in a watered-down floor exercise routine and vault at the National Championships, she debuted a laid-out version of the “Biles II” during her training for the National Championships and placed sixth in the all-around. As a consequence, she was added to the national team and qualified for the Olympic Trials, as well as receiving an official Olympic spot via the Apparatus World Cup series.
During the Olympic Games, Carey competed in the all-around and advanced to the vault final in second place behind Biles, as well as the floor exercise final in third place behind Vanessa Ferrari and Biles. She also made a verbal commitment to compete in NCAA gymnastics at Oregon State University beginning in the 2018-2019 academic year.
On November 9th, 2017, she enrolled with the Oregon State Beavers and postponed enrollment until after the 2020 Olympics, beginning in the 2020-2021 academic year.
