Kamala Harris was a deputy district attorney in Alameda County, California, from 1990 to 1998. She worked on cases of robbery, murder, and rape of children. She worked at the San Francisco District Attorney’s Office in the late 1990s.
In 2000, Louise Renne, who had been elected as San Francisco’s City Attorney, asked Harris to take over as head of the Community and Neighborhood Division.
In 2003, Harris beat out Terence Hallinan to become the District Attorney of San Francisco. She is the first person from South Asia and the first black woman to get the job. In November 2007, she won another term. As the District Attorney, she started a program to help first-time drug dealers get their high school diplomas and get jobs.
Harris’s book, “Smart on Crime: A Prosecutor’s Plan to Make Us Safer,” came out in 2009. She tried to look at criminal justice from an economic point of view in the book.
In the 2010s, she did different jobs for the California District Attorney’s Association and the National District Attorney’s Association.
In 2010, she ran for California Attorney General against Steve Cooley, who was the district attorney for Los Angeles County. She won, and on January 3, 2011, she became California’s first Jamaican American woman and first Indian American attorney general. In November 2014, she ran against Ronald Gold and beat him.
In the 2016 California election for the U.S. Senate, she beat Loretta Sanchez by getting 62 percent of the vote. On January 3, 2017, she was appointed in as the California Senator for the United States. From the beginning of 2019, some people thought she might run for the Democratic nomination for president in 2020.
