    Letitia Ann “Tish” James, sometimes known as Letitia James, is a lawyer, activist, and politician in the United States.

    In 2018, she took over for Barbara Underwood. From 2013 until 2018, James served as the Public Advocate of New York City. She formerly served in the New York City Council from 2004 until 2013.

    Letitia James was born on October 18, 1958. Letitia Ann James is her birth name. Her birthplace is New York City, New York, United States of America.

    Her father’s name is Robert James, and her mother’s name is Nellie James. She has a total of seven siblings. She follows Christian religion. Her zodiac sign is Libra.

    Talking about her education, she attended public schools in New York City. She then joined Fort Hamilton High School.

    After that, she studied at Lehman College, CUNY and graduated with a B.A. degree. For further education  she joined Howard University School of Law.

    Career of Letitia James

    In 1989, James was admitted to practice law in the state of New York. She worked for the Legal Aid Society as a public defender. She founded the Urban Network, a collaboration of African American professional groups dedicated to assisting young people with scholarships.

    She was a member of former New York Governor Mario Cuomo’s Task Force on Judicial Diversity. She worked for Albert Vann, Roger L. Green’s Chief of Staff in the New York State Assembly, and New York Attorney General Eliot Spitzer’s administration. She became the first Assistant Attorney General in charge of the Brooklyn regional office in 1999.

    In 2001, she ran for the 35th Council District, but lost to James E. Davis. She fought Davis’s brother Geoffrey for the Council seat. From 2004 until 2013, she was a member of the New York City Council. James initially advocated for the demolition of the Second Empire houses on Admiral’s Row in order to make way for a parking lot for a proposed supermarket that would serve residents of nearby housing developments. However, he later changed his mind and supported the preservation of some of the historic homes.

    In May 2013, she filed an Article 78 lawsuit against the Bloomberg administration and Acadia Realty Trust, along with a group of construction unions, community groups, and other elected officials, seeking the closure of the City Point real estate project and a reassessment of its environmental impact.

    She was the head of the Economic Development Committee and the Sanitation Committee. Parks and Recreation, Small Business, Technology in Government, Veteran Affairs, and Women’s Issues were among the committees she worked on.

    In 2013, she won a runoff election to become the Democratic candidate for Public Advocate of New York City. She was the Public Advocate of New York City from 2013 until 2018.

    She had intended to run for Mayor of New York City in 2021. In 2018, she announced her campaign for Attorney General of New York City. She was elected New York Attorney General after winning the Democratic primary in September 2018 and defeating Republican Keith Wofford in the general election in November 2018. She replaced Barbara Underwood and was sworn in on January 1, 2019.

    In August 2020, she filed a civil complaint against the National Rifle Association (NRA), naming four NRA department chiefs as co-defendants. The National Rifle Association countersued James, citing remarks she made during her 2018 campaign. In August 2021, her office issued a report claiming that New York State Governor Andrew Cuomo had participated in many incidents of sexual harassment.
