- She later quit her work at the bakery to be a full-time nanny for Charmaine and Anna Marie.

- Caroline Owens, 17, became the Wests’ children’s nanny in October 1972. They had taken her up on a dark rural road after she had seen her lover in Tewkesbury.
- On December 6, 1972, the pair enticed Owens into their car with an apology and a promise of a ride home.
- Owens’ mother called the police, and the Wests were charged with assault, indecent assault, ABH, and rape. However, at this time, Owens had decided she could not endure the torture of testifying in court.

- In September 2001, she declared her innocence and decided not to challenge her convictions.
