Meet about her Husband: Nirmal Purja
Nirmal Purja is a naturalized British mountaineer who was born in Nepal and holds a number of world records.
Prior to pursuing a career in mountaineering, he served in the British Army with the Gurkha Brigade and then the Royal Navy’s Special Boat Service (SBS), a special forces unit.
Purja is famous for climbing all 14 eight-thousanders (mountain peaks higher than 8,000 meters or 26,000 feet) in a record-breaking six months and six days using bottled oxygen.
He was also the first person to summit Mount Everest, Lhotse, and Makalu all on the same day. Purja and a group of nine Nepalese mountaineers completed the first-ever winter climb of K2 in 2021.
Nirmal (“Nims”) Purja was born in Dana, a small village at 1,600 meters above sea level in Nepal’s Myagdi district near Dhaulagiri, in July 1983. His family moved to the Chitwan District, near Kathmandu, when he was four years old.
His father served in the Gurkha army, and his mother came from a farming family. Suchi’s marriage with Nirmal was not supported at first because they were from two different Nepalese castes, and they were cut off financially and socially from their respective families.
“We came from a really poor family,” Purja told National Geographic, adding, “As a kid, I remember I didn’t even have sandles to wear” Purja’s three older brothers joined the Gurkha army and paid for him to attend an English-speaking boarding school.
Purja developed his kickboxing skills while in school.
